Basanti St Teresa’s Teachers’ Seminar

Teachers usually speak of problems they face from students. The teachers of Basanti St Teresa’s Girls’ High School spoke about the cooperation they receive from the children – they take correction well when explained nicely, happily cooperate to keep the premises clean, readily do tasks given before any special event etc. This positive attitude was reflected when they spoke about how they tackle children when they are not so nice.

It was a two-days seminar for teachers of this school in South 24-Parganas, West Bengal, organized by Sr. Maxima, headmistress and facilitated by Fr. Pradeep Roy and the psychologists of Paribar Jyoti. The topics discussed were, 1) Know your teenager students for better rapport and better grooming.  2) Effect of the teachers’ unity and team spirit on their own mental and physical wellbeing and on the students. 3) Impact of  teachers’ family  relationship on their performance in the workplace.

The teachers vividly described how encouragement can help the children to grow while the harsh words and humiliation which children face in many schools can destroy their self esteem and self-respect with great impact on their future.

Discussing about the impact of teachers’ unity, they said that cordial relationship among teachers or lack of it can influence their peace of mind and enhance or diminish their self-confidence to face challenges, resulting in better commitment and positive feeling towards the children or the opposite of these.

All agreed that happiness or unhappiness in family life has a bearing on the mental wellbeing of the teacher which affects their dealings with colleagues and students and ultimately on their performance and job satisfaction. The discussions culminated in enumerating what they can do to deepen their family relationship and the steps they can take to enhance their spirit of unity in the school.
